Anonymous asked: Are your photo concepts spontaneous or planned?
My photographs come about very intuitively. I don’t start by sitting down and thinking about what I want to photograph. I think with my camera, and in the last few years, through arranging objects. This is a way for me to work through ideas. If I start out knowing exactly what I’m going to do or why I want to do it, and refuse to work responsively to events as they unfold, I get nothing out of the process. The results are also boring. The act of making anything is to engage in a conversation, and therefore I like to plan as little as possible (how can one plan conversation?). Every now and then there are photographs that require some preparation to make. I’ll see a product online or in a catalogue that I want to work with and decide to order it. Usually the photograph I like the most isn’t what I envisioned when I started.
So, I suppose, neither spontaneous nor planned.
